PRAGUE – Czech tennis player Lukáš Rosol announced the end of his career at the age of 38, during which he won two ATP singles tournaments and won the Davis Cup twice with the Czech team.
He last appeared on the elite circuit in a singles match the year before last in October. He announced his decision on Instagram.
“Everything comes to an end, and this end is harder than any other. It was not at all easy to come to this decision. Tennis was, is and will be my whole life. But time does not stop a person and does not command a sore body. My career had everything it had to have. It worked, it hurt, it was lost, it was won,” wrote Rosol. The former 26th player in the world now ranks 974th in the rankings.
“It’s time to leave it to the younger ones and look forward to the fact that, for example, my son Luka will one day take over the baton. He will definitely have the opportunity and support that I received. It was a really beautiful ride and I thank you for this dream come true,“ said the native of Brno . He thanked his parents, coaches and wife for their support.
He celebrated his greatest successes on the ATP circuit in 2013 and 2014, when he won tournaments in Bucharest and Winston-Salem. Already in 2012, he shocked the tennis world when he beat Spaniard Rafael Nadal as the 100th ranked player in the second round of Wimbledon. He also has three doubles titles in his collection. At Grand Slams, his best result is the quarterfinals of Roland Garros in 2015.
In 2012 and 2013, he was a member of the winning Davis Cup team with Tomáš Berdych and Radek Štěpánek. He earned over 4.7 million dollars in tennis.
